Subject: Escapades with the monk's scooter

LOL:

Yeah but....That was only with girls at the St. Joseph's Girls Academy down the hill...

Where I would go play "Romeo" after stealing Fr. Gregory's or Fr. Hildebrand's Lambretta motor scooters at night after lights out...

Ask Frank Malaver about one incident, when I invited him along once for the adventure.

If once incident stands out better than others.....It is this one:

Sometime in 1968, I asked Frank Malaver if he was interested in coming with me to visit the girls at the Academy that night.

He thought for about 2 seconds and of course he was in.

So I briefed him on what to do and what to expect.

I could see he was a little bit worried, but not too much....yet.

We got up a few hours after lights out, and got dressed in all black clothes, then we sneaked out of the 3rd floor dormitory window and down the water pipe on the side of the building like cat-burglars.

Then down to the garage area, where the buses, cars and the scooters were parked.

The scooters were not locked and they could be started. (ahhh, those were the innocent days!)

So, we pushed the scooter down hill and bump-started it in second gear when sufficiently far from the monastery so they wouldn't hear us.

And down the hill we went with Frank Malaver hanging on for dear life behind me.

It had rained and the road was wet and we slipped out and slow-crashed in one of the curves after passing the swimming pool.

Nothing serious, just some scrapes and a scare, but then Frank got too scared and wanted to scrap the plan and return back up the hill.

I didn't want him to get more worried and I said OK,... let's go back.

As we were going back up the hill, just when we round the curves by the private houses that were just below the PAX Guesthouse we saw headlights! .

Oh shit...Next thing we see the headlights of this vehicle coming down the hill..

It was one of the VW minibuses from the Mount!.

Almost in panic we quickly parked the scooter on the side of the road in front of one of the private houses there, and dove head first into the bushes just as the minibus was driving by.

The bus stopped, backed up, a few minutes passed.

We kept our heads low, not daring to breathe!!!

The after a minute or two, the bus drove away.

We sighed in relief.

After waiting prudently for a few minutes to make sure the bus was gone, we remounted the scooter and, now with hearts pounding, drove it back and parked it in the same place it was before in the garage.

The whole episode took no more than maybe an hour, but I still remember it like it was yesterday.

We fully expected an investigation by the monks the next day, but never heard anything from the incident, and Frank and I swore to each other that we would not tell a soul about it.

Well I think the statute of limitations has about expired on this little caper by now, so finally I am telling.....

I always wondered what did the driver of the bus think after seeing the scooter belonging to a monk parked in front of this private house at 2 o'clock in the morning??? HMMMM

That Girl's Boarding school was located in the nearby village of St Joseph (just to the west of Tunapuna).

It was called St. Joseph's Convent, run by Nuns of the order of Sisters of St. Joseph.

I think that school still exists.

They used to cater heavily towards the Venezuelan students, just like the Abbey School did.

On occasion, in the middle of the night, I used to "borrow" Fr. Gregory's and or Fr. Ildephonse's Lambretta motor scooter at night and run down there to visit my girlfriend platonically through the window.

Her name was Jeanette and she was the sister of one of the Mount boys, Rudi Polderman.

Fulvio Cantore's wife, Paola, was also a boarding student there at the same time.

Attila,

What is this platonically through the window thing yuh talking about, every time I mentioned girls before, the first thing you would ask is ' Did you get lucky', now yuh giving us this platonic excuse, well did you get lucky or what ?

I'm confused, now after all that work Attila, platonically waiting your reply,

Glen. ha! ha!

This was different.

No, I didn't get lucky with her..Just long looks, conversation, a few hugs and furtive kisses during the dances and fetes, that's all...

You know, "puppy love"...what can I say.

These night visits on the borrowed scooter to the school were just very chaste exchanges from a distance through the window.

Just like Romeo and Juliet used to do, HMMM... Oh boy, now I am turning red!

Didn't even try to go any further....

At that time we had this "honour system" double standard ...girlfriends you were in love with, were to be honoured and respected.

Besides, the Nuns were very vigilant for the honour of their girls at all times, so we had no opportunity for mischief either..

Also, she already had gotten in trouble because the nuns had found a bunch of my "love letters" to her.

(Good thing they didn't find HER replies!)

ER...Now the "Moon River" is whole other story. : - )

It is about smuggling, murder and a man named CARUPANO.

Yes, it is entirely possible.

There has always been a healthy smuggling trade between Trinidad and Venezuela across the straights.

And it will be there forever.

Back in the 60's it was contraband merchandise, today it is mainly drugs.

Smugglers, like pirates, as all criminals do, often readily kill-off each other even over petty grievances, It's not like they can take it to court.

More criminals die from being killed by their own colleagues-in-crime and enemies-in-crime than by law enforcement.

The smuggling environment would seem plausible as far as some turf war between mafias, should that have been the case.

Venezuelan smugglers would work with their Trini counterparts or would sometimes doublecross them, feuding with them.

A reason as to why "Carupano" moved to the Mount in the first place could perhaps also have been that he was on the lam from some arrest warrant issued by Venezuelan authorities.

The story about Enrique and his purported tryst with "Carupano's" maid might ring a bell with Raul, Fulvio or Gonzalo.

Yes I think I may have heard something like that too, but, then who knows?

Stories and wild speculation fly around.

You really jogged my memory about Enrique Gomez fooling around with this girl in the back of the house.

I had forgotten about that!.

I think it would be a good idea to send your addition to the story below to the others also, so maybe somebody else's memory gets jogged enough to remember, and perhaps add even more details.

Maybe we can solve this mystery yet!

From what I heard back then "Carupano" was or had been a smuggler plying his trade across the Bocas del Dragon between Chaguaramas base and Guiria and Macuro.

Supposedly the crime had something to do with that, some squabble over undelivered goods, pricing or a payment to be made or collected.

Something along those lines.

I also heard "Carupano" had a young maid, don't recall if she was a local, but Enrique Gomez among some others would mess around with her in the back of the house of "Carupano" either while "Carupano" was there or absent.

Enrique passed away so there is no way now of confirming this second rumour.

OK, now to continue to my next instalment of my Abbey School stories:

(Some of you, especially the Venezuelan boys there during this time, may remember this story)

This is for Cheche's compilation of chronicles of the Mount.

Murder Mystery at the Mount.

Sometime during the years 1965 to 1967 there was an older man who was a Venezuelan retiree living in one of the small houses along the path leading down from the School to the Sports Field.

This small house was located on the right hand side just as you passed the PAX Guesthouse and you started downhill on the footpath.

I think it was either the first or the second little green cinder-block house on the right hand side of the path.

It had security iron bars on the windows,

In this house lived this older retired guy we called "Carupano".

We never knew his real name.

As we Venezuelan boys walked down to the sports field we would wave to him, and sometimes stop and talk to him in Spanish.

He was from the little fishing town of "Carupano" on the Eastern seashore of Venezuela.

He was always friendly to us and soon after he would invite us into his living room and we would play cards and dominoes instead of going down to the sports field.

We would have great joke telling and bullshit sessions.

Sometimes he would let us drink a little rum with honey,

We always had a good time there and we laughed a lot.

Many of the Venezuelan boys would stop and hang out there, sometimes ducking down to hide when one of the priests or school staff walked by.

It was a way to break the monotony of the school and to do something different.

Suddenly, there was a strict prohibition from Bobo and Cutty for the school boys to visit "Carupano's" house.

No reason given. Just could not go there any longer.

Some of the boys still went there to visit clandestinely anyway, just because it was "prohibited" and to be able to get away with it.

One day in the morning, the rumour began to spread in school:

"Have you heard what happened to the old man Carupano?"

" No ... What?"

"He was murdered!"

"No way!. really?"

So we went down that afternoon, as if going to the sports field and, sure enough, the house was cordoned-off with several police officers standing outside.

As we passed the house we tried to glance inside as best we could.

The were signs of struggle, with blood spattered all over the walls etc.

They would not let us get any closer.

After a few days the crime scene was lifted and the windows were darkened with soot so nobody could see inside.

But we did anyway, we could still peek inside in certain places. and, sure enough, it was a grizzly scene. Carupano was gone.

None of the adults around there or in school would speak about it and nobody told us the reasons for the murder.

To this day I still don't the who, what, or why or the reasons or the motives for it.

After a while they cleaned up the bloody mess and for a long time the house stood empty, abandoned, locked and boarded up.

As far as I remember nobody ever lived in that house after that, at least not until I left the Mount in July 1969.

Today, being older and less naive, and having been in the federal criminal investigative profession for over 25 years, I have a suspicion that the murder had probably to do with some kind of revenge, maybe from some parent.

From the way this guy acted towards children, and the sudden prohibition to see him or to even speak to him, maybe, just maybe, this old guy could have been a child predator (?),... but this is purely speculative on my part, after 40+ years.

So this mystery still really continues....

I just found out that I still owe more taxes than I already paid last year!

Dammit, I don't remember the last time that happened. WTF?

I have no idea why,.. yet..but I will find out.

Every year I usually get a nice refund check from the IRS, (which of course the wife promptly spends)...but that is another story.

Anyway...I am now scrambling to find every little missed deduction I can find to minimise this tax impact because if I don't bring the owed amount down below a certain value I will have to pay a penalty and also interest on top of the taxes owed.....and I don't really want to do that.

So, if you will forgive me, but my priority right now is to dive head-first into a pile of receipts and paperwork, calculator in one hand, the computer keyboard in the other, a notepad in front of the computer, a pencil in my mouth and the phone cradled in my left ear talking with my accountant.

Of course, the wife is doing her nails right now...I can smell the acetone.

Yes,...I think I will be a little busy for a while here...I will get back to you all as soon as I am done with this shit.

RIGHT NOW I AM NOT HAVING ANY FUN!!!!!

Smoking at the Abbey School

Jan Koenraadt

Sunday, July 6, 2008 3:17:10 PM

Dear Nigel,

I have this attached scan of my Terminal Report dated July 1965 to add to your memorial.

I would like to add this story to it about smoking at the Abbey School.

Smoking cigarettes at the Abbey School was strictly forbidden.

But as good as I can remember a lot of boys smoked almost every day.

The toilets on the playing grounds were a favourite place to smoke, almost every day.

The monks must have known because all the students knew it.

Once in a while they "raided" the toilets to catch some smokers.

The safest place to smoke was somewhere in the hills, and the best place to hide your cigarettes.

Just bury them in the ground in a plastic bag.

The hard way was to get cigarettes.

A package of Snow Flakes was 40 cents, we could easily pay it with our weekly allowance of one dollar.

Sometimes some boy would sell them, and we brought one or two packages from home.

If you had permission to go down town, the first thing we did was to buy cigarettes.

I must confess, once I started smoking, although it was forbidden, I smoked almost every day at the Abbey school.

But one day I was caught buying cigarettes in the shop just below the swimming pool.

From the monastery I was seen through a telescope.

Nobody said anything, but when the weekly pocket money came, there was no envelope for me.

I had to figure out for myself why.

The whole rest of the term there was no more pocket money for me.

In spite of that I still smoked almost every day, there were some boys who felt pity for me and gave me a cigarette.

But at the end of the term, there was still a surprise coming for me.

Although I was fifth in my class during exams and satisfactory promoted to Form III, just at the moment you feel great and longing for the summer holidays to come, this little sentence was added in my Terminal Report: "Jan must give up smoking. This is strictly against the rules".

My dad was old and did not understand English at all.

That I was fifth in class hardly got his attention, but this sentence about smoking made him angry for some weeks.

When I look back, it had this lesson to me, that I kept on smoking for fifteen years on, and at my own free will and at a time I chose myself I stopped smoking in 1982 and never smoked again.

I never smoked before my children but gave them the freedom to choose for themselves at their own free will.

And the result is they never took up the habit of smoking.

Regards

Jan Koenraadt

Fw: Smoking at the Abbey School

Attila GYURIS

Sunday, July 6, 2008 8:04:45 PM

OK, I have some more to add to that.

Yes smoking was forbidden for all Forms below Form 4. (though many boys did it in hiding anyway, and there were not any REALLY bad consequences to it).

That rule changed for the Form 4 and Form 5 boys.

There was a Form 4 Recreation Room and a Form 5 Rec Room, adjacent to each other.

They were both located on the bottom floor along the East side of the school building.

(For short while there was also a Form 3 Rec room, but that didn't last.

Too much privilege for the "small" boys who hadn't earned it yet!)

The Form 4 Rec room was a small room and had a few tables & chairs to play cards and dominoes, plus a record player.

The room was open only for a few hours during the evenings' free time.

The Form 4 boys were allowed to smoke but only when inside the rec room and only in the evenings after dinner.

But when you made it to Form 5, you had a world of privileges thrust upon you!.

There was a big difference between Form 4 and Form 5, as far as privileges went.

Among other things, you could request to go to town (P.O.S.) for shopping (or to just get out) every Saturday morning with the VW bus.

You were given a " MSB Checkbook" with printed cheques.

So, you could write a check for cash to the Bursar (Mr. Fernandez) any day of the week, as long as you had the funds in your count to cover it.

So that taught you some money management.

You were not mandated to go down to the Sports Field.

You could go exploring in the bush all afternoon if you wanted to.

You could do pretty much whatever you wanted with your free time, within bounds, of course.

I was allowed to own a pellet gun and go to the bush hunting with it.

I had it hanging openly on my dormitory cubicle wall, and the priests never said anything about it.

Back to the Rec Room,... The Form 5 Rec Room was much better!

It was bigger, had more card tables and chairs, It had mood lighting.

It had couches, and a stereo record player.

It also had a privacy curtain by the door, so the small boys couldn't peek inside and bother us.

Obviously Form 5 boys were allowed to smoke inside the room, BUT, here is the kicker, (at least when I was in Form 5 in 1968 o 1969), Form 5 boys were also allowed to smoke OUTSIDE of the rec room.

That is, they could smoke up next to the refectory, and also outside in the hallway in from of the rec room etc..

In fact, I think the only places that they could not freely smoke was in class, during meals, in the dormitories and in the sporting grounds.

I remember lighting one up after dinner as were coming back down the inclined driveway from the Refectory, no problem.

Also, the Form 5 Rec room was open all the time.

It was up to the big boys to know when to leave for other activities.

Consequently many Form 5 boys " lived" in there, except when eating, sleeping and attending classes.

All this plus the occasional parties where the St. Joseph's Academy girls were invited and there was actual slow dancing in the basketball court with steel bands and all!

Whohoo! life was good for a senior Mount Boy! ..... Or so we thought!

So, as you can see, things really loosened up in the late 60's.

Maybe it was the 60's liberalisation of societal laws and structures and the hippy culture mind-set and all that conveys... or maybe the priests were getting tired...Who knows?

Attila Gyuris

MSB 1964-1969

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------.

Upon reading the email sent by Attila, my mind got hold of my fingers and started writing:

In the period 1956 1960, smoking was permitted mainly for Form V boys.

If I remember you had to have permission by your parents, I just remember someone telling me, but not too sure, since I did not smoke or maybe I was not in the right group of kids.

The smoking was in the evenings and in the big boys room, which might have been the same one as in Attila´s time, entrance door facing the infirmary door, and the same size of the infirmary, the way to the windows looking down the valley. In our time one of the walls was the pictures hall or the theatre hall, below the chapel.

The room had a radio and if I am not correct, a pool table??, maybe Manuel Prada can help, I do not remember this too well as I only went there to listen to the radio, during some of the short vacations when there were not too many activities.

An later this was not interesting as I managed to build my radio for listening at night, Crystal radio with a transistor amplifier.

Or latter a real radio during Form V.

The radio stations were scarce in those days, AM, two stations, all official government and the only good one, the Chaguaramas US base radio with rock and roll and the latest hits.

On Sunday night, since there was no study hour, the old boys used to go down the driveway to the first bend and climb trees to smoke and chat.

I remember this because at the back of the school next to this downhill driveway it was dark and I wanted to play a prank with these smokers.

I rolled a paper tube with a light bulb at the end painted red, two wires to a small battery which would light up the red bulb at the tip.

Walking up and down I would smoke the paper tube lighting intermittently the bulb, sooner or latter one of the old boys would shout at me and come up running.

In the long run, they recognised me and the prank wore off. Ed.

Hi Kazim,

I do not send out emails to a database.

Only Ladislao and Nigel do so.

I know a lot of the "old boys" are sensitive about using the database for the circulars.

Perhaps, you could just send your messages that you want circulated to Ladislao for him to include in the circulars.

He makes sure not to let anyone know to which email addresses he is posting stuff.

Then, everyone who wishes to register or otherwise contact you can do so without quarrelling with them for giving out their email addresses.

I have no idea why everyone is so sensitive about email addresses, since they are all available all over the Internet anyway.

Can you clear this up for me?.....blessings to you....

Thanks Don for your following up.

I appreciate you and here is wishing your family reunion is one of peace, love, joy and harmony.

Nigel Boos responded to me and told that Anthony "Gabby" Johnston did do the other website.

No other info though.

And, I would definitely love to get those photos from the website you have in folders.

In addition, can you tell me on what page the thumbnails does not work.

I did that only for the Archives page which I have left out now and replaced with a "Photo Albums" link and Page instead.

I will be putting thumbnails on this Page today.

The other Pages with Photos do not have the very biggest photos as yet as in your blog.

I will have to discuss that with you when you have more time.

Again Don, thank so much for all your support.

Continued blessings to you.....

Hello Kazim,

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I am in St Kitts for a family reunion, and have only very intermittent Internet access [only one Internet cafe found in the entire town of Basseterre].

The short story is that Anthony Johnston, an old boy living in California, developed the first website.

He abandoned it several years ago, and refused to acknowledge any emails asking him what was going on with it.

I don't think you will find anything.

I have folders of every photograph ever published by him, in more or less the categories you suggest.

On a related issue, I find that I cannot open the photographs on your website when I click on the thumbnail.

Is that correctable?

Don

Thank your for your remarks Don.

Did Arthur Knaggs do a mailing out circular before Ladislao for the Old Boys?

And who created and facilitated the old website? http://www.theabbeyschool.com,

I appreciated any information, and I am open to crediting you with this information to the website.

Blessings to you....

Hi Don,

This email is to inform you that the Abbey School website has been up and running.

I keep updating and adding photos, information and all-round look of the site as I go along.

Can you give me some feedback.

It is a long process.

Ladislao and you have done so much work over the the years.

I am trying to consolidate this work of yours of the blog.

It will take some time to organise and complete.

However, the process has started.

Any pertinent information to add, let me know.

I will have to go over the blog with a fine comb and sift off information and update the website as I shared above.

The website is www.asaatt.org,

Blessings to you....
