Circular No 412

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 26 September 2009 No. 412
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
I am extremely sorry if this Circular that I am sending out today might affect the status quo, that exists between the Association promoters and the Monastery’s leader.
But at least something is going to happen after you read this Circular.
Sorry Joe, but I perceive no forward movement, and our dreams are being fooled.
I was at several meetings with the purpose of forming the Association.
That was in May, and four months have passed without any visible results and not only that, but I foresee no visible result, if we keep working in a pussyfooting manner.
Why, because the impetus we had at the beginning of the year has been lost, yes, we have lost our North and have spent undue energy to admit that we have lost it.
I presume that it was not planned this way, but at this time there is not enough energy to get up from our chair and jump the next hurdle.
Maybe it is not an obstacle, but we have made it into an obstacle by not finding a way out.
In all venues there are obstacles and the most difficult to overcome are not those posed by Nature but those set up by individuals.
We have not been lucky in the pursuit of our goal because we believe that the road we were taking was the correct and more elegant one and least difficult, but no way, forget the gentleman’s way or forget the idea of an Association being set up in TRINDAD.
If we do not take measures to restart and finish, we shall be as guilty as those that are past and did not do anything when it was their time.
PART II shall appear in CIRCULAR No. 415 and so on, every month we shall keep track of the results so that the idea does not die.
Now back to our Circular.

ASAA Committee Meeting
Monday, July 20, 2009 4:50:14 P
From:   Nigel P. Boos
Arthur,
Thanks for your input and opinion.
As the original founder of the Old Boys Association (albeit under a somewhat different name), I believe that you have a prior right to be heard, and I am therefore forwarding your email to the existing committee for their kind consideration.
I am very much in favour of two representatives of the Association meeting and talking with Fr. Abbot, to understand his hesitation in approving the use of the name "Abbey School" in any Association which has been / will be formed. Until we know the grounds for his position, we shall be only "spinnin' top in mud. This needs to be clarified and reported back to the Committee, at which point we would be better able to respond.
God bless you.

Nigel,
Many moons ago I Invited and Chaired the Group of Old Mount Guys to form our association, which has progressed beautifully all these years, and I marvel at the "Torch Bearers".
Actually, I disagree with many of the shattering (very un-Christian) words expressed in Hudson´s letter, and strongly condone any of the three proposals of the ASAA Com.
Jesus died because so many of us cried 'Crusify Him'.
His reply, "Forgive them for they know not what they do."
A voice in the wilderness!

Thanks for the update, Chris.
I believe that talking to Fr. Abbot is the very best thing that can be done.
Did any discussion take place re: the money still being held at Royal Bank here in Ontario for Kitty Marcus?
Thanks again.

Chris,
I would appreciate if the Committee would please discuss the disposition of funds collected on behalf of Kitty Marcus and donated by some of the Old Boys.
Hudson McKoy and I are the signatories to this account, and I would hope that by now some decision could be made by the ASAA Mgt Team as to what should be done to honour the old lady.
Thanks.

Gentlemen,
At our meeting on Sunday last it was decided that I should contact Dennis Gurley with the following alternative names:
1. Mount St Benedict Old Boys Association,
2. Mount Old Boys Association,
3. Mount Alumni Association.
This has been passed on.
Meanwhile, Dennis advised me by phone that he and Peter Tang will be meeting soon with the Abbot, and I am hopeful that we may get somewhere with our original Association name choice.
As a result we will have to wait a while until we get feedback.
In anticipation,
Chris.

Dear Che Che and other Old Boys;
Please find attached (for your information) the exchange of correspondence with Fr. Abbot concerning the use of the “Abbey School” as part of the proposed name for our Alumni.
Regards,
Dennis
As you have noticed, the steps and formalities were conducted in a straight forward and legal manner.

MSB Old Boys (!) Committee Meeting Sun 14th June 09.
From: Don Mitchell CBE QC
Sorry, I can't be there. I have a couple of suggestions re name.
If the initials "MSB" won't work, how about "Prison on the Hill", the title of our school song back in the 1950s and 1960s?
How did the problem with name come up?
Did you get a lawyer's letter?
Or, was it just a word of mouth objection?
Word of mouth, as you probably know, is not worth the paper it is written on.
Hopefully, you will let us have a report on Ladislao's visit that he can publish.
I have no idea what happened.
No doubt, he will publish something from his point of view, but it would be doubly interesting to see the Trinidad point of view.

Gentlemen,
A committee meeting is proposed for 7.30pm Sunday June 14th in the Members lounge at the Queens Park Cricket Club, Elizabeth Street, Port of Spain. Earlier dates are clashing with committee members prior committments.
The Agenda is  1. To discuss the Association name,
                     2. To Discuss matters arising from Ladislao's recent visit, incuding Association publicity etc.
                     3. Any other matters.
Item One is occasioned by difficulties in obtaining permission to use 'Abbey School' in our Association name.
There is a Cricket Festival during this month at the Oval, and parking inside the car park may be a problem, so street parking may be necessary. However, I think that by 7pm (on a Sunday) things may be over owing to impending work on Monday!
When you get there call me on 345 7987 so I can direct you if necessary.
I would appreciate a response so I know who will be there (or not).
See you there,
Chris.

Hello Old Boys,
Since I now understand that the principal obstacle is the refusal of the Registrar of Companies to permit the name, I recognise that there is no way around it, having once served as a Registrar of Companies myself.
May I suggest "Escapees from the Prison on the Hill", for those of you who remember the old school song.
Alternatively, and as a second choice only, if Trinidad permits letters and numbers to form the name of a company, as Anguilla does, how about the acronyms "ASOBA" or "MSBOBA"?  We would know what the word means, which is all that is important.

Dear Peter,
I believe that this is the correct way to go.
Have a chat with Fr. Abbot and find out, from his point of view, what the problem is, with the use of the name "The Abbey School Old Boy's Association" or "The Abbey School Alumni Association", or whatever.
It appears to me that Fr. Abbot seems to have either heard of or witnessed something which has turned him off re. our group.
We need to get that straightened out.
I find it difficult to understand why he does not respond to my very few emails which I have sent him, with strong suggestions for the benefit of the MSB community. Perhaps I do not have the correct email address for him.
The one I have is: jaebp@hotmail.com.
Perhaps you could ask him to confirm his email address for me?
Good luck. Enjoy the chat.

History Questions about the Old Boys Association
Wednesday, June 10, 2009 7:21:20 PM
From:   Nigel P. Boos
And thank you too, Arthur, for your most wonderful contribution over the years, towards the Mount St. Benedict Old Boys as a group. I'm sure you must be happy to see how the whole thing is working out today, and the interest that is being shown by everyone, in reminiscing about the past, good old days at the Abbey School
Might I ask you to do something for us? We need to know something about the history of the Old Boys Association, ever since you started it back in whenever. Why you did, what you did, when you did, how you did, where you did, etc.
And what was OASIS all about (what did OASIS really mean, anyway?)
Who took over the running of the Association after you? Was it Duncan Ferguson? Was it Trevor Soodeen? I'm getting information from so many sources that I'd like to hear it from you yourself, to settle the issue.
I know that there was also a President's Trophy awarded to the boy who most wonderfully reflected the values of the Abbey School. It would be interesting to now who the recipients of this trophy were, and in fact, where the trophy actually is at this time.
I do remember that one year I was asked (did you ask me?) to become the President of the Association and my reluctant response was that I was too busy or some such, but nevertheless, I had to drive up the hill to the old school on "Prize Giving Day" to present the President's Award. After that I promptly left TT for some other country and never went back for many years.
Some help in understanding the development of the history would be very welcome.
Thanks, Arthur, and keep well. Love to Val and the kids.

Folks,
Our planned Roti Night at Rotilcious in Ajax is a mere 8 days away, and I am still waiting to hear from you as to whether or not you'll be coming, and whether or not you'll be bring your spouses.
I would encourage you to respond soon, so that we'll have some idea as to numbers and so that the restaurant will know if they have to employ one or two more people to help out that night.
Since it appears that a $15.00 price tag may be too much, I'm going to reduce it to $12.00and drop off the tea/coffee and ice-cream. (Apologies to the ladies).
Therefore, your $12.00 ticket will cover roti, a soft drink, doubles and a tip.

Anyone wishing to have tea / coffee and some ice-cream dessert can do so for an extra
charge ($2.00 per item).

Salah Wilson (MSB 1970) is hoping to attend, with his family steel-band, to provide a little
entertainment.
As you may know, his home burned down on May 4th in Montreal
Anyone wishing to help Salah can consider purchasing one of the steel-band text books he has written, and have it delivered to one of the 20,000 musically-illiterate young steelband payers in TT (Salah's request).

Please let me hear from you soon.

Nigel

Hi Ladislao,
1.                  1. Just put this out there see if any one remembers in the early years of Mount we use to go down to a river without permission and would bath in a little pool called catchecam.
I think it eventually became popular and there were supervised visits for the boys, or was this another pool in the river near by??

2.                  2. Did any one ever take over our den in the mountain?
We called ourselves the bar bell boys and built a wooden hut with a swing rope.
[dave de castro-malcom boyack-lawrence mc cauley-colin phillips-peter dos santos donald boyd and delano de castro}.
We would go off and lime and lift weights, and swing to our hearts content twice a week.
What beautiful memories of Mount.
I feel sorry for anyone who does not share fond memories.

Thank you for getting in touch with us.
We've been hunting for you guys for a few years already, and it's great to hear from you. I honestly cannot tell you how we got your email address, but probably some off-the-cuff remark from someone or other directed us to you.
Welcome.
We have an Association of Abbey School Alumni, based in Trinidad, and the mastermind behind our effort is Ladislao Kertesz in Venezuela , who conceived the idea about 6-7 years ago to try to contact the old Boys of MSB and to establish a networking forum through which we could keep in touch with one another.

We have had a few reunions in Trinidad, and here in Canada, where I am based, we also have got together twice to enjoy a roti as a group. Fantastic!
Perhaps you could spend a little time to put together 2-3 paragraphs for us, to let us know what you've done with yourself since leaving the Mount.
And if you could also send us a recent photograph of yourself, it would be a nice way to let any old friends see what the years have done to you.

One thing I do need for you to clear up for me is this:
I've been told that you came to MSB from Pomeroon in Guyana. and that there were 3 De Jesus boys - Compton, Sylvester and Vinitus, who left MSB in '68, '69 and '79 respectively.
Can you please confirm any of this for us, and also, if by chance you happen to have any old MSB photographs still hiding in a cupboard somewhere, how'd you like to share them with the rest of us?

Question: Did your family originate in Madeira? (I have a private reason for asking, which I'll share with you when you answer).

Dear Cornel, Terrence
Good for writing about the meeting that took place with Egan, Cornel and Nigel
None of the others did as yet and I presume that they are not going to write either.
But I need to get the contents of the little box that you left at the reunion, photographed item by item.
Also scan the documents.
The general photos of the items make my mouth droll.
But the photos that you sent are not good for the general archive, because of the low resolution, preferably each medal should have been photographed individually.

Especially the scout badges, only Jan has sent a couple of photos but the rest of the KING or QUEEN Scouts just do not remember anything and have nothing to show.
Not even memories of the Jamboree Camps or others.
Finally I get to see Egan, after 49 years.
He sat next to me during the last year at the study hall at the back row left.
He is on the list since 2002 but is not inclined to write.
I am glad he is well and has a beautiful wife, please tell him.
I can only ask you to be an intermediate for this job, as you are closer than I.
Also remember that if you get an interesting email, please FW it to me if you believe that it can forward the cause.
This is the "material" I talked about.

Familia, amigos(as) y colegas:

Finally I have retired from LSU starting on the 31 of July.

A small oil company of California gave me a contract full-time for two years as oil adviser.

They have several exploration projects and production in the USA, including one in Australia.

The owners of this company, with their modern ideas, consider that with these computers and telephone systems of today their employees can work from where they live.

The meetings are summoned every two weeks in New Orleans, it is an hour from where I live.

The best thing is than we do not have to move from Baton Rouge and the university allows to maintain my office in LSU as it is accustomed with his ex- professors viejitos, retired like me.

At least, we will be near our youngest daughter who begins to study in LSU within two weeks

For those they need to visit this region of Louisiana please tell me. Here you have a friend.

Un abrazo para todos.

Casita Auto Sufficiente Para Viejitos Jubilados‏

Because several of you, as well as I, already viejitos and think to retire soon, here you have a self-sufficient small house.

It is for construction near the border of the sea. Having all the equipment and materials, it can be constructed in less than two weeks.

I plan to construct mine soon in “Florida Keys" to the south of Miami.

This will not be a problem because it is hurricane proof.

Also it has another advantage that is “spouses cuaimas" proof being sufficiently inconvenient for them that they are not going it to want to accompany you.

Hope you enjoy it!

Saludos, Donald

I wasn't in the office because I took a few days off to go to Miami to visit my daughter who had her second child; a beautiful baby girl whom they named Isabella.

Regarding your trip, Christian and I will be in Houston on June 24th packing my Mom's things and loading a truck to move her to Christian's house in Oklahoma City.

Then on Saturday 25th Christian will head home to Oklahoma City with the packed truck and you can follow me back to Baton Rouge and spend a few days with me.

I spoke to Christian about this and he is going to try to contact Mac Schuelt who lived in Anaco and I believe went to Mount.

All of us can go to dinner in Houston on Friday the 24th, get caught up, and talk about old times.

This fits in pretty well with your plans and you will also get to see Christian and perhaps Mac as well.

You'll notice that I'm copying some of the old farts here in order to make them envious of your trip and maybe convince them to make similar ones to visit old friends.

I've met my quota by visiting Caracas in December and getting together with a bunch of the guys at a restaurant.

The reunion was organized by Isaias and Urbano and we had wonderful time.

I'm very curious to know whether David's trip with Urbano to Canaima was an enjoyable one.

Have him tell you about his Venezuelan adventure so that you can pass it on to us.

We look forward to seeing you again after all these years.

Tried to call you yesterday but they told me you'd taken the week off.

I have contacted David Ames and Bill Groeschel and the latest standing is as follows:

We’ll be flying on June 15th or 16 to Raleigh, stay with David Ames till June 19 or 20th in the morning, then fly to Houston and spend the next 4 days with Bill Groeschel.

Then, on Friday 24th, go to Baton Rouge, or Christian could pick us up etc.

In other words how about spending June 24 to June 28th with you.???

We are leaving for Bern right now and will be back on Monday (May 23 rd)evening- please give me a short reply if the general scheme is OK with you.

Un abrazo

Dear Ladislao:

As I read your discription of the daily mass we had to attend during our time at Mount (1953-1958), I recall that mass didn't seem to bother me too much.

What I didn't enjoy was having to go to confession once a week and invent sins.

This is no joke!.

I recall one time when I was probably nine or ten years old, I went to one of those weekly confessions and I began to speak with that lovely Trini accent with which we spoke in those days; "Forgive me Fada for I have sinned, it does be one week since me las confession but I cyant recall anyting I did dat was bad".

The priest answers me. "Well son, let me try to help you out and refresh your memory. Did you fight with anyone? Did you disobey anyone? Did you take anything that did not belong to you and did you tell any lies? Now let me hear you my son".

With such great prompting, I decided to come up with some terrible sins.

" Yes Fada now I does remember wat I did dat was very bad.

Two days ago I pelted Urbano wid one of Broder Joseph stale hops bread and he got one ugly black eye.

Yesterday I does stole some julie mangos dong de road and brother Swa caught me and pulled me ear, and four days ago I disobeyed me fada and me muda.

But as far as I does recall I have not tole no lies."

What was my big surprise after I felt so good that I had told all my sins, when all of a sudden he shouts at me through that little screen in his perfect Dutch accent.

"You are nothing but a big liar." I replied trembling. "Why Fada does you tink so."

And again I heard this loud voice from behind the little screen.

"First of all I just saw Urbano and he doesn't have any black eye.

Also, brother Swa as you so disrespectfully call that lovely, smelly man, has taken leave for the last two weeks and is not here.

And finally your mother and father don't live here at Mount."

All I could say was; "Ok Fada, you does be right .

For lying to you, instead of three Hail Marys I can say a whole rosary."

Quite upset by now, he finally said to me, "I make the rules here, not you and you will say not one but two rosaries, and next week you had better come back with some real sins and not such silly lies."

Well to make this long story short, from that day on and after having to say two long rosaries, I became so scared of lying that I started commiting real sins.

The following week I truely pelted Urbano and as many Mount boys as I could pelt with the hardest stale bread I could find.

Then I became the best mango thief at Mount and I ran so fast Swa could never catch me.

I even stole juicy and honey from dem behives.

Then I tried my best to disobey evey rule at Mount.

All of this, in keeping with the good Fada's advise to bring real sins to the confessional at not make up lies.

He was correct, and from then on for telling the truth and not making up sins, I only got three Hail Mary's and no long rosaries.

The moral of this true story is that you must commit as many sins as possible to keep our priests happy when you go to confession, but you must never lie. No, no, none of dat.

Well Ladislao, I'm quite sure that most Mount boys experienced similar situations when going to weekly confessions.

If any of you deny this you does be lying because I can name many mango tiefs and stale bread pelters like myself and you all know who you does be.

I won't name anyone out of respect.

Please pass this on to our group to see how many will admit to the TRUTH.

Best regards to all.

Dear Ladislao:

Please don't even think about giving up your great work of maintaining the Mount Boys informed about one another's whereabouts and about the old place.

I believe that most of us really do enjoy receiving your newsletter although our feed back at times is not continuous.

In my case, it's been two weeks since I checked my email at home and of the many I found this time, your MSB circular is one of those I like to read.

Best Wishes to all.

Hola Ladislao:

Our brief history is the following:

None of the Goddard brothers actually graduated from Mount.

We arrived at Mount in 1953 at ages 8, 9, and 10.

In 1958, at age 15, Brian was sent to Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania.

He got his high school degree from here in 1961 and went on to study at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Also, in 1958 at age 14 years I was sent to another Catholic boarding school (Cascia Hall) in Tulsa Oklahoma.

Christian joined me at Cascia Hall in 1959.

We both graduated from here, in 1962 and 1963 respectively.

I went to Florida State University where I graduated as a geologist.

Christian stayed in Oklahoma and got a Psychology degree from Oklahoma State University. Unlike Brian and I, who returned to Venezuela, Christian remained in the USA and never returned.

Brian still lives in Valencia and I moved up from Maracaibo to the States

with my family in 1990.

In hindsight, we think that our parents took us out of Mount because

1) They couldn't understand our English since we had developed such a strong Trini accent,

2) Brian was getting too many licks on his hands with those leather belts and he kept running away, and

3) We kept complaining that we didn't like Mount and preferred to be at home.

So one day our Dad decided that perhaps schools in the States might be a better alternative.

Christian and I were very happy at Cascia Hall and like all Catholic schools it was very good academically and sports were very important.

Not wanting to offend anyone (this time), I must admit that the American priests at Cascia Hall were kinder, not as fanatic, and more down to earth than those Dutch Monks at Mount.

One of the things I enjoyed at Mount was listening to the Gregorian Chants that the monks sang in the early morning and evenings.

Still today I enjoy this wonderful music.

The other was having met such a great group of young people like us, some of whom became great friends for life.

We were all in the same boat, studying hard, playing sports under the guidance of Brother Vincent, stealing julie mangoes from Brother SWA and gobbling up that lousy food in the cafeteria.

The bread that Brother Joseph made was delicious (and the honey, juicy fruit, many apples and mangoes). However, after the bread hardened we would pelt each other and it hurt like hell.

Anyway, this is my short?? Answer to your question concerning the formV.

Perhaps Christian and Brian will add more news.

Best wishes,

Donald G.

Dear Donald

Thank you for the email.

You and WVB did know each other.

If WVB graduated 1960 with me and I knew you??.

I enjoy your comments; your writing is a welcomed break with all the fun.

I remember those days when Christian used to go about with the leather jacket, in the 35C degree weather, with the inscription MGO.

Can you write me the Form V graduation year for the three of you?

I wish you a merry Christmas and happiness

God Bless

Ladislao

Please convey to Wayne Brown (whoever he does be) that I also enjoy his stories.

I like reading them especially at night when I can't go to sleep because within in few minutes of his exciting penmanship I find myself snoozing.

Since Urbano and Peter never did learn to read very well in English, they will undoubtedly struggle to understand Waynes profound writings.

By the way, the only reason that Peter Morvay showed up for the meeting was that he was expecting a free meal from those wealthy Caracas Oligarcas.

Manuel Prada no longer shows up because after forty years of listening to the same BS about Mount and having to see the same old farts as Urbano, Isaias, Pedro Castro, Ladislao, Azier, etc he has become fed-up.

Who can blame this poor chap.

However, I must admit that I miss those delicious dinners at the Alazan in Caracas in the old days and collaborating with the Mount BS with a bunch of wonderful individuals.

Best wishes to all.

From wise guy, always making sport,
